Hello... Did you have a good weekend?

Last week was a little busier than usual for us so Sunday was a wonderful day to catch up and stay close to home.

We actually did a few things around the house while we listened to the constant 'hum' of the football games on television.

I have had some sweet little curtains sitting quietly in their box, waiting desperately to be hung in the Hearth Room windows...  Some of them finally made it up!  Since the temps are dropping rather quickly and we had a nice chilly rain for the past few days it seems that there is finally some sense of urgency to get these windows covered!

And I'm still on a sour dough bread kick.... and after feeding the starter once a week you are supposed to make bread.  Every week...  It's a really good sour dough and the family always enjoys it, but there always comes a time when you haven't eaten all the bread you've made and it's time to make more!  So I decided to cube the left over loaf and bake it to make sour dough croutons for salads or casseroles.  You know fall is casserole time, right?

And then I offer up this picture of a very tangled looking Christmas crochet project.  It's funny because the colors are so fall-ish right now, but it really is a Christmas thing.  I promise to come back and share what it looks like for real.  I won't even use the Hipstamatic App!

It is going to consist of some deeper, jewel tone colors, (I think), and I think it will make Granny proud.  Honestly, with all the pumpkin, maize and dark blue I would be willing to scrap the whole idea right now - but I've seen the pictures of the finished thing, so I will hook on!

Fingers crossed, Granny...

xoxo

It's Summer

A single sunflower stands alone on our courtyard patio, deserted by the height of summer temperatures. We seem to have retreated indoors to delve into good books and be transported by old movies (I am always way behind everyone else).

The Thai Basil and Rosemary seem to be enjoying the warmth and solitude, as do the mints. No little hands have been present to experience their fragrances or flavors. The catnip has not returned. Too much presence by hefty felines have once again proven the need to have catnip grown in a top secret location, only to be witnessed by the fine felines in fresh snippets provided to them. As opposed to rolling, smashing and gnawing freely.

As we support local farming, our CSA share of fruit has filled the Hearth Room with delightful aromas of apples and cinnamon.  Almost makes me long for fall.  When the rich colors and warm, spicy scents of the fruits and flavors are bubbling, waiting for family gatherings.  And the temperatures invite us back outdoors to play in crisper air and crunchier leaves.

But it is definitely not time for that.  Not yet!  The garden is producing plenty of beautiful vegetables to share and prepare for winter meals.

I offer squash and cukes to all who visit the Hearth Room. Soon I will be pushing tomatoes and onions, too.  Although, right now Hubby is still marveling at how well the onions have done, allowing them to continue to swell.  Well, except for a few....

Add to the mix these wonderful Romano Beans we were gifted by a fellow gardener.  I am learning to cook new things, as well as old favorites in different ways.  These meaty beans were prepared with a coating of EV olive oil and chopped garlic.  Dashed with sea salt and pepper and roasted on a baking sheet.  Summery goodness at it's finest!

Somehow we managed to skip planting zucchini here, but it seems to always be one of the first things folks share.  This year has been no exception!

As soon as a zucchini comes through the door, it ends up here in a rich, sweet batter.

My young apprentice has found cooking to be a wonderful world of exploration lately.  From how sticky your hands and face can get to how exceptionally good things taste.

Oh, my little zucchini breads...  You didn't last long enough.  I do hope another large squash makes it through our door soon.

And absolutely worthy of mentioning is the very delicious and necessary corn fritters that are a tribute to everything good Granny taught me.  Every summer for as long as I live there will be corn, fresh from the cob, mixed with milk, flour, eggs, salt and pepper, with a little dash of sugar.  I wrote of them last year and I probably will again.  That Granny, she's  a good one.

Fresh, hot, corn fritters, cukes and red onions (don't tell Hubby), and beet greens from the garden.

I'm not sure I ever shared with you my unconventional corn and potato patch.  Yet another space in need of landscaping, that once the potato bags called it home I found the need to fill in around them with corn and sunflowers.  Just another moment of whimsey.

Speaking of whimsy along with the joys of summer, I have to show you one of my most favorite-ist things ever.  In this very unexpected place, a little couple of bluebirds have decided to make a home.  This birdhouse was made by Young Man a few years ago and as you can see, it hangs and is not stationary.  No matter to the little bluebirds in love that desperately sought out this place as their home.  The place to raise their little family.

One tiny orange mouth, ready to be fed, competing with two others.  I can see this box just outside the Hearth Room door.  I have had the most heart squeezing fun seeing these 3 blue eggs hatch into the tiny balls of fluff they are now.  Mama and Daddy are the best birdie parents, watching over them constantly and taking turns feeding those hungry mouths.  I'm waiting for the chance to get a really good picture of them, but Daddy Blue has been on to me lately...  I thought I'd give him a rest from worry for a bit.

As our retreat indoors continues, I am constantly reminded of my need to visit the great outdoors by happy, energetic children, immense plants climbing out of the garden, and by little feathered friends who are holding me to my promise of filling the feeders that I so lovingly hung for their benefit.  Yep, they just lie down and wait right in the dish until I come and provide.  We all seem to get a little stuck in our ways here at the Hearth Room.  Even the outdoors is spoiled .

A Few Things Done...

Hey Friends!  What's up with you today?  Happy Friday to ya from the Hearthroom!

It's been a fairly good week here, although it seems to have sped by so quickly, whew!  In all the flurry of activity that has taken place here I have somehow managed to get a few things done so pardon me while I celebrate...

Done thing(s) #1:

Yay!  Aren't they cute?  Yep, Sweet P still hates them...  She's obsessed with headbands at the mo, so I'll hold out hope, but I tell ya, I'm done trying to accessorize that girl.  I'm going back to making her clothes instead.  She does enough accessorizing on her own anyway.  Hubby loves it when she's found in my closet...  Wearing my shoes and handbags that are way too big for her, but she thinks she's larger than life!

Pardon my lack of light.  If you've been to the Hearthroom before, you know...

In the process of reorganizing things I have dug up something of a collection of buttons and beads from various jewelry making and sewing endeavors, so they came in handy here.

I do love those ladybugs!  What is it about ladybugs and little girls?  They just seem to go together.

So on to Done thing #2:

You know the little baby 'giant' granny I mentioned?  All done.  Check!

Sorry, I can't show it in all it's glory since it's supposed to be a surprise.  So I really hope a certain someone isn't spending too much time in blog land...

Done thing #3:

Honey Oat Bread...  Aahhh.  I do love fresh bread.  Way too much in fact.  Especially since I'm trying to be good (sort of ) and running and all, this is really the last thing I needed to make.  Oh well.  It's wonderful.  Lovin' from the oven.  We ran our second mile last night with Young Man.  Headed out right after this post for mile 3!

This is not something that's 'done' but I've been needing to make some lists and organize various things so I pulled out some of the notebooks and journals I've had tucked away.  I've always had such a thing for stationery.  I just love it.  So I'm thinking the above notebooks need a little crochet action.  What do you think?

And then I have this beauty:  Made by a lovely, talented crafty friend, I've kept this stashed away because I haven't wanted to ruin it, lol.  I've got to use this one for something special.

And this fabulous journal, will you believe it if I told you this cover is actually removable?  So I can write and doodle until my heart's content and then I can take this great cover off and place it onto another journal.  This was another gift from a very talented, (very), crafty friend.

So as I organize my thoughts into lists and plans and make use of some of these lovely journals I was thinking I may need to make some covered journals, or journal covers, of my own....  My brain is chock full of ideas!  It's funny too that I came across a blog post the other day all about journals and lists over at HearthandmadeUK with some great ideas.

And then if you actually want to make your very own journal out of a vintage book, you MUST see this tutorial at Homespun Living.

And then for all you stationery and letter writing lovers out there, guess what I came across yesterday?  A letter writing challenge.  Well it doesn't have to be a letter.  It could be a postcard or a note, etc.

Just click on the image for the link.  You'll enjoy it!  Come trade some good old fashioned snail mail with us.  In fact, if you would like to receive a little note from the Hearthroom, just leave me a comment with a way to get something to you!  I have about 20 spots or so left.

I had to show you some kitty love on the way out.  Meet Fritz and Ginger.  Fritz is just a love lump and Ginger is just one of the best girls.

So you will NOT believe the CRAZY idea that has popped into my head about what I have to try and crochet.  Yes, the Ripple will be restarted first and then the bright pink yarn, but then I have to try something that is probably fairly ridiculous, but hey, it will be worth it if I can do it!  I've got to go jot down my idea(s) while they are fresh.  I feel like I'm forgetting to tell ya something, but this post is long enough as is!   Gotta go!

Love, love!

I love your comments...
